Oitoo’s competition proposal took the challenge of answering a demanding brief: how to plan for a new affordable housing building under super strict budget concerns, in an heritage area in Lisbon’s historic centre.

The new building, with 31 apartments + common areas and underground parking, looks to complete the street front leading to Campo de Santa Clara, the venerable place of the weekly flea market, right amidst the landmarks of the Pantheon and the monastery of São Vicente de Fora.

Inside, a new garden open to the public offers a space of respite and a lovely backdrop for the new dwellings, completing the city block and merging with the backyard of a neighbouring palace.

The building expression looks for standing out while fitting in a serene and contemporary interpretation of the post Earthquake XVIII to XIXth century buildings that strongly characterize the city’s historic centre .

The facade reacts differently to the street front and the inner court, adapting specifically to the different contexts.
